The famous and powerful president of the « Union pour la Nation Congolaise-UNC », a political party standing for unity for the Congolese nation) Vital Kamerhe as officially been elected as president of the Congolese parliament this Wednesday 22 May 2024.
Three days after a putsch invasion into his residence which cost the death of two guards followed by the failed attempted coup in president Felix Tshisekedi’s offices, the outgoing Vice prime minister and minister of economy was elected by 371 voters (members of parliament) to replace Christophe Mboso N’kodia at the perch.
Appointed as the only candidate at the position by the « Union Sacrée pour la Nation – USN» a political platform sustaining president Tshisekedi, mister Kamerhe had no opponent since the opposition did not compete due to a very low representation average.
Kamerhe is coming back to a position he is good at
From 2006 to 2009, Vital Kamerhe had ruled the parliament under president Joseph Kabila. With this experience, he has promised to commit himself to good management of the country. That is to say, providing equal talk time to members of parliament while discussing different aspects of the congolese political life.
Let’s note that Vital Kamerhe is an important figure who influenced the first election of Felix Tshisekedi in 2018.
Consequently, he was appointed as first chief of staff of the Head of State. Unfortunately, he was later on jailed, accused of embezzlement of public funds in a huge project in accordance with the president’s first 100 days. Helped by a good amount of lawyers, he was discharged and release. After his imprisonment, he was appointed Vice minister and minister economy. In December 2023, he was elected as member parliament in Bukavu, his native land.
